Hi, I’m Gabriela Martínez,
designer and textile artist. I’m the creator of Ofelia & Antelmo, a textile art project
focusing on hand embroidery that seeks to generate unique
and timeless pieces. My work has been exhibited
in art fairs in Mexico, Brazil, Hong Kong, France and Chile. I’ve also collaborated
with artists and designers on photography and decoration projects in hotels like Orchid House,
at Polanco and Tulum. I love color and textures. I like to find a pattern
in interesting textures, register them
and use them in my creations. Textile pictures are my personal work, where a creative exploration of textiles,
colors and compositions takes place. In this Domestika course, you’ll learn my creative process
to make a handcrafted textile garment. As final project,
you’ll create a unique piece that integrates your personal vision. First, we’ll work together
to choose the color palette that we’ll use for our collection. I’ll give you tips to create sketches
with the collage technique, and we’ll choose a final design that we’ll use during the course. I’ll give you
a brief overview of embroidery and I’ll show you
my three favorite stitches to give texture and movement to my work. We’ll see the rice stitch,
the running stitch, and the fan stitch. Then I’ll show you
how to cut your fabric and together we’ll draw the necessary
guides to start embroidering. We’ll embroider the garment
and, last, I’ll show you how to do the cuff and an embroidery stitch
to attach it by hand. With this course, you’ll know how
to make and embroider textile art pieces including textures and colors
to give them a unique finish. To take this course, you needn’t have
any embroidery or dressmaking skills, just a genuine interest in expressing yourself
through fabric and thread. The materials you’ll need are: strong cotton fabric, mouliné floss,
embroidery needles, scissors, color pencils, cutting ruler and pins. If you don’t want to make a garment, you’ll be able to embroider
a garment of your wardrobe, or any medium you want to explore. This course is aimed at anybody wanting
to discover a new tool to spark their creativity. Don’t be daunted by embroidery. Find out how powerful
handcrafted textiles can be. Designing Handicraft Garments
