How to Paint Freckles – Digital Painting Tips & Tricks
Welcome to Paintable Tips and Tricks, guys! Today I want to talk about freckles. Today I want to show you how to create your own brush to create some freckles. And I have this illustration here today and I really wanted to add some freckles. So what I did is I painted a few freckles on her cheek. And I think that makes the whole difference to the illustration. So today I want to show you how to make your own freckles yourself. Now, there are two ways to do this. I could just take a brush, and make a soft round brush, and put some really small dots everywhere. But that would have taken me forever. So instead, what I have is a brush that will add some freckles randomly like this. And today I want to show you how to do this. So let’s do this. So the first thing you need is a canvas that is 500 pixels by 500 pixels. And you want it to be at 300dpi in resolution. Click OK. And the only thing that you have to do here is make sure that the color is black, so I’m gonna make sure my color is black my pressing on “D” which will give me the default colors. And from here on the same layer of the background, I’m just going to take a soft round brush, and I’m going to paint some dots. Different dots, different sizes, …,some big, some small, some more transparent, some more opaque. I’m just gonna go randomly like this. And… And from here, what you want to do is go to Edit and Define brush preset. You can name it “Freckles_1”. And from here you can simply just close the document. Photoshop will already take this brush pattern and add it to your brushes in the Photoshop Cluster. So you can close this and you don’t have to save it. And from here, I’m simply gonna go to my brushes, and the last brush and I would have would be the one that I just created. Now I’m going to just put a white canvas so you can see the difference. So this is the brush that I created. As you can see, it’s not really perfect right now. It’s just kind of repeating the brush that I created It’s not really mixing the dots altogether. So we’re gonna have to actually modify that brush a little bit. To modify the brush a little bit, you simply have to go to your brush panel like this. In the brush panel, we’re gonna click a few things. First, we’re gonna click the Shape Dynamics, the Scattering, and the Transfer. And now I’m gonna show you what it does. As you can see, the dots are really more random. They’re not copying like exactly what it was at the beginning. So now I can use this brush to actually make freckles. But before I do so, I need to make sure that I save this brush. And for this, you just have to be on your brush panel again and click on the top right, and you just want to select New Brush Preset. Give it a new name, “Freckles_2”. And once again, Photoshop will add it to the very last one. From here, you can go back on your illustration, add a new layer on top of it, pick the color that you want, and simply paint. Now I’m painting over eyes, over nose, over everything because I’m on my own layer so I can actually come back and delete. And I can delete quite a bit just to keep exactly what I want. That’s it for this trick, guys! If you liked it–share it, post it, tweet it, pin it, and subscribe to our newsletter!
