Introducción al cómic digital – Curso online de Albert Monteys

August 17, 2019 2 By Peter Engel

Hi, I’m Albert Monteys, draftsman and comic specialist
for digital platforms. I started in 1993 and for 18 years
I worked for “El Jueves” magazine, of which I was manager for four years. Then I started to publish my work
in digital format, the humor magazine
“Orgullo y Satisfacción,” and the sci-fi comic “¡Universo!,” for which I won
an Eisner nomination in 2016, and I won first prize in the Barcelona Salón del Cómic
in 2019. In recent years, I have transitioned from the traditional comic
to living out the digital comic. It’s a new world, full of possibilities, but it also has its own rules
and limitations. It’s important to understand the format
and make the most of it. In this course I’ll give you the tools to tackle the creation
of a comic in digital format. As final project, you’ll create
a short cartoon strip for social media. We’ll see the specificities
of a digital comic and how it’s different from paper.
Then we’ll explore the different digital formats and analyze the types
of stories suitable for each of them. The next step will be color analysis. You’ll learn the basics of RGB
and quadrichromy and choose the ideal format
for your cartoon. I’ll review the possibilities that digital media afford
for narrative and graphics, as well as interactivity,
animations or special effects. Then I’ll run through
all the analog materials that you will use in your comic. We’ll review those you will use
for digital processing. It’s important
to learn the Photoshop tools to add color, touch up, and how to draw,
choose brushes and organize your work space. I’ll explain how to choose the format and platform
to suit the story, and how to approach the lettering. Next we’ll design
our cartoon’s characters, and you’ll learn
how to plan out the story to give it more impact. Before drawing the cartoon, we’ll analyze the action
from design to expressiveness. I’ll show you how to approach
the drawing with blue pencil sketching, finishing up with marker and India ink. Then we’ll scan the sketch,
touch up the lines and add color. The next step will be the lettering. Last, I’ll give you tips
to publicize your work and make the most
of your digital comic. You’ll have the tools
to create your comic and make your work known. You don’t need any previous knowledge, since the most important element
is the story, although basic notions
of drawing and Photoshop will be an advantage. Your tools will be: paper, blue pencil, a ruler,
markers or India ink and brush, and a notebook to organize your ideas. You’ll also need a computer
with Photoshop, a graphic tablet, and a scanner or cellphone
with camera to digitalyze. This course is aimed
at anybody interested in comics, who wants to offer the reader
the best version of their story. Introduction to Digital Comic
