iPhone PHOTOGRAPHY | Tips & Tricks to Taking the BEST Everyday and Travel Photos

The best camera that you can have is the
camera that you have with you and for a lot of us that’s our phone I’m Christine
with Where in the World is cL and I just recently started a travel vlog I shoot
and edit everything from my phone along the way I’ve learned some really helpful
photography rules that have helped me to up my photography game today I’m taking
the ultimate challenge and teaching my mom how to take better photos so hi from
sunny San Diego we’re going to go out and get some really great photos so if you’re ever visiting San Diego you
have to come to North County and in Encinitas where they have the
self-realization fellowship and there’s these really beautiful meditation
gardens and actually where we’re sitting right now it’s a really great place for
a photograph so we’re gonna do our first shot here first photo we’re taking just
a picture of ourselves and you really want to try to capture the space and so
a literal photo is fine those were the first photos that we took but the second
one that we took was in portrait mode so already built into the iPhone and just
simply switching over to portrait mode blurs out the background a little bit
and makes it look a little bit more professional this is great but it
doesn’t really give you the full essence of how beautiful this space is one of
the things I was trying to do was take a picture of my mom and shooting through
something so you could feel like you were in the gardens with us I’m using
the leaves of the tree here to take a picture of my mom to capture not just
her but a little bit more of the space and make it feel like you’re here with
us so we walked to the top of the gardens
which there’s this beautiful view of the ocean from the top and my mom wanted to
take a landscape panoramic photo which is a really great feature on the iPhone
and I loved it but there are a couple mistakes I see a
lot of people making when taking these types of photos the first one is that
she’s going too far across it’s really important to think about what is it that
you want someone to see and what should and should not be in this pano the
other thing is focusing the light on exactly what you want the picture of you
want to make sure that it’s not too much lighting or too little lighting in other
words the exposure in the picture so after you get to the top of the garden
you have the beautiful view it continues as you walk down and you can see the
entire North County San Diego coastline which is beautiful and my mom really
wanted to capture this moment in which she’s looking at the coastline the first
photo she took she got one of the people who’s here in the photo and so making
sure you’re thinking about what is and is not in the photo so we made a small
adjustment of getting that woman out of the photo but even as we look at the new
photograph that she took I feel like if we were to go home and show my dad this
picture he’d be like oh yeah that was nice if your can’t come back from
traveling and you’re like the pictures didn’t really capture it well you want
to capture it and so one of the things that’s really unique about this space is
that you have like desert like plants as well as palm trees in the background and
then the beautiful ocean what I wanted to do was capture a little bit of all of
that and so what we’re gonna do is shoot through some of the desert like plants
but get the palm tree in there but what I was doing in this photograph is I’m
holding my finger down to focus on the ocean and the coastline because that’s
the most beautiful aspect that I want you to be looking at and I have it
centered in the photo so you can kind of see this difference between the initial
photo that we took to try to capture the coastline versus this new one that gives
you a little bit more of a feel of the space as well as the coastline all right
let’s take more photos you’re walking around there is this
really beautiful pink flower that my mom wanted a close-up picture of and as I
was asking her what it was that she liked about this flower it’s the shape
and how it looks like a poinsettia and it’s also the color like she took the
photo it was very literal which is totally fine
you could see exactly what the flower looked like so I try to make her photo a
little bit better by doing a couple of things one was I wanted to capture a
little bit of the background because there was this beautiful palm in the
background the other thing I wanted to do was capture the pink of the flower
and so I did that by Auto locking onto the flower and then I was changing the
exposure in other words the light so that it captured the pink just right and
I could see it in the camera in the same way I could see it with my eye not
through the camera and I try to do it a little bit of a different angle and
again using the rule of thirds trying to Center the middle of the flower directly
into the frame and that’s how I got at this better photo so what my mom wanted to capture in that
last photo was the beautiful path and the tall tree and she wanted the picture
one of the things I see is a lot of people using panoramic across which is
great but I love to get that shot at the panorama tool so a couple things that
make a panoramic photo better one is don’t hold the camera and move it with
your arms well you want to keep it as steady as possible so elbows locked in
hold your camera and you’re gonna move your entire body up that helps you get a
really steady shot my mom used the rule of thirds in this picture where she’s
putting me on the left third of the photo so looks taller and it’s capturing
a lot of this really beautiful tree and you get a sense of what it looks like in
the gardens in this photo versus I made a great afternoon of shooting and
now we’re at the taco stand because you can’t come to San Diego without eating
the Mexican food I hope you found some really great tips on how to take better
