Photography Tips: Long Lens Landscape Photography

hope you like how I work specially for
you but it is cold here now there’s a popular myth that you need to use a wide
angle lens to shoot landscapes and isn’t necessarily true because you get a great
effect with a long lens so I just want to show you kind of what I’m thinking
and how by changing lenses in moving your body just very very slightly will have a big
impact on your composition and composition is really important we got
a very dull grey day here so we’re in Iceland Iceland workshop the guys are
down there just having a chatting and filter change so I thought I just use
this opportunity to tell you some stuff now obviously over here we’ve got
mountains with snow we got a grey day said composition is gonna be really
important we got lots of grey I like these gray rocks down here and we got
these remains at his old wooden boat up against him so he got ground ground
ground grey with little hints of this sort of almost great goals for the grass
is going on down here so what’s going on in my mind the composition I’m thinking
of is boat in the foreground with rocks and then mountains grey sky grey
water rocks going on going on into the distance so if I put my lens onto 24
millimetres let’s 24 mill shot and get fairly close shave the difference the
same shot with a longer lens so it’s fine my composition I want this pointy wood at the top here I want to line up against the water so
that it makes the prow of the boat really stand out as opposed to being
lost amongst the gray so like bend the knees let’s find the place where I need
to be at 24 mil quite close close here there we go look closer make intimate you know widely is a great
for making things intimate and close here we go so Im gonna focus on the boat
itself it’s not far away the field is good for maximum depth of field I just
gonna run to about how f-16 something like that need to make sure my shutter speeds fast
enough so im gonna push my ISO higher about 400 ISO see we’ve got with the shop composed
at giving the fiftieth of a second with 24 mil lens we should be
absolutely fine no camera shake focus on the boat we got front-to-back sharpness
with a wide angle shot let’s just put the longer lens on and see what that
does for the composition for the feeling in the mood in the shot I’ll be back in
a tick when i change lenses long lens on when he will she takes her
shot ok so much the same composition as we have before so just check what I had
something like that what’s going to happen I want to bring those mountains
over there a little closer in behind the boat and I’m also thinking I want to
really isolate the boat and t he stone and we’re gonna i wana bring that human element into the shot
you know the sort of like the ruin of somebody’s life with their boat and the
stones that it’ll can and and kind of the roughness of nature but I really
want the focus of the shot to be the boat in the human element so how we going to
achieve that have little think this is all part of that composition well I
needed by having a shallow depth of field I’m using the full frame with 2.8
lens so I’m gonna actually take my lens wide open do everything we say you shouldn’t do in
landscape but it shouldn’t it’s a rule is it real or is it not really you can
do whatever you want to create what you want to my vision needs a wide
aperture so 2.8 let just find where my composition gonna work area on shooting she’s not going to
be any belongings on their way to a bend my knees still don’t have little point in
the battle going above the horizon that’s nice that’s nice I want the
mountain off to the right and the rocks in the foreground that’s pretty cool of
that just kinda works but you see just how by absolutely focusing on the timber
work of the boat that plan made human element absolutely so the smacks in
amongst the natural stuffby using a shallow depth of field and a longer lens
we brought the peaks in the distance in closer and I’m not saying either one of
these shots is right or wrong whichever you prefer is whichever you
prefer personal preference it’s almost a portrait photography techniques to bring
bouquet into landscape gives a really interesting looking it’s all part of the
composition game because you’re composing a picture speaking of which that little spiky bit
it one last thing over here have a little look at how we can change the
composition and how important it is to look at aspects of the composition gonna go for my shallow depth of the failed again F 2.8
left to right now I’m gonna be shortening the length of it and I don’t
need such a small aperture so I got more like coming in my ISO back down remember
guys push things up and down all the time I so high ISO lower absolute great
also gonna be ready for the opportunistic shot ok what I’m thinking
now is a straight-on shot the bow of the boat with some rocks in the foreground
the beach on the other side in the scree slope of the mountain with a little bit
of ice and snow coming down is a great shot even though we haven’t got any
strong light is still gonna work how we do it from the camera that way up this
breaks and landscape rules as called landscape format portrait or landscape
in portrait as just come up on the front of the boat I dunno 70 millimetres only use the front of the
boat to be sharp so let’s see where I need to
be shut a speech at 6:42 500 on separate email so we should be fine line in order
to get the bug smack in the middle and my frame going up and down there we go
now if I shoot this from here at the beach lined up it’s like having those mountain
peaks the boat really really sharp you see how that little point apiece on top
of the boat is now colliding with the line of the stones on the beach is not
quite so good I want separation there is really important to study you
composition really really look at your pictures do in the viewfinder also check
it in the LCD how am I gonna move that I want to put the beach higher it’s really
really simple change the composition just by moving forward that sort of
gonna move forward fraction of a phase inches just stretch a bit taller line it
all up make sure everything straight I have the good display on in my view
finder so it can make sure everything straight and nicely lined up when I
shoot it there we go I just climbed to look higher slightly
fewer rocks in the foreground and i got that separation at the top between the little piece of
wood on top of the boat on the beach on the other side composition is really important when you
shootings particular on dull day because is one of the things you’ve got to rely on and
politics and so in post production which is kind of trying to play be darkened
the sky just make this yellow a little tiny bit stronger than I’m seeing
them in the back of the camera because don’t forget i’m shootin raw raw files
with look dull so we may need to do that tiny tiny bit but they go to this
wonderful fundamental but using a long lens in the landscape you don’t just
have to stick to a wide angle landscapes Hawaii maybe subscribe to our
