Hi I’m George Peirson, this video is about doing this rain drops on a window effect, along with that though we’ll be combining several pictures, the window, frame, the raindrops picture behind the raindrops, and the vase are all from different pictures. So a lot of little techniques in here as well as just doing these raindrops. Now if you enjoyed this video make sure you click that Like button and also Subscribe to my channel and Share with your friends. If you want to learn a lot more about Photoshop Elements look at my complete training and you’ll find a link for that up in the upper right hand corner. Okay, let’s get to it. [Music] This raindrops on a window picture has four basic parts that you see over here on the right-hand side. The first and for this back part is simply the background picture with a slight blur applied to that so it looks like us in the distance and then we have our raindrops in here now to get them the right size in the window pane will be make them a little bit smaller and then duplicating that several times and combining that on to one layer there’s any another special layer to give us that white highlight in there not really necessary not really needed there it is without I just think it makes a nice a little more obvious so it’s a little bit less realistic but a little more obvious it depends it’s personal choice on that one on that layer there’s also a little bit of a change here in the settings as well as to again adjust the look on those above that of course we have the window frame that is one picture right here with the layer mask and then above that is a picture of the Vaz with the flowers in it now notice that the light is kinda from the background you can see it right here on the edges the lights on the outside and the vaaz here is lit up from behind and it’s kind of shattered on the front I picked this picture on purpose because of that lighting so it looks like it’s being lit by the window back there as opposed to being lit by a light in the room okay let’s go ahead now and see how this whole thing is put together minused save this out and get rid of that file and we’ll start with a brand new file so file new blank file and I have this one set listed up the default Photoshop Elements size which is a width of 6 height of 4 and resolution of 300 if using inches and pixels otherwise if you’re metric there you go there’s the metric settings for that I’ll put that back two inches here and there we are she’s okay so here’s our basic file now for a lot of this I’ll be using this floating in enlarged to make it easier to work in this particular picture first office make sure you can do floating windows like that go up to edit come down to preference and general setting right there on this one is that one checkbox right there I’ll laughs loading documents in expert mode make sure that that is checked she’s okay if it is you can then float your windows or you can dock them just like that or pull them off and float them again now that’s gonna a floating window is make it much larger in here I can actually pull this window out like that describe the bottom right corner pull it out a little ways grab the zoom tool and zoom in a little adjustment here and I can make it about as big as I can get it inside of my workspace giving me a lot more space to work on the image of course I’ll need to move it around sometimes to see what’s hiding me behind it but it does give me a nice large work area okay so after this we’ll start off by bringing in the picture of the window frame and getting that layer set up now I have one of course already right here it’s called window and you’ll also find this in the materials for this video so let’s just open that one up now it’s the wrong size I’ll have to adjust this and we’re only going to be using just the bottom piece of this right down in here so let’s just take this another reason for a floating windows because I can simply grab the background and drag it on to my other image just like that let’s close that down so here’s our floating window I want to enlarge that a lot so I’ll pull it up like this grab that corner and pull the corner down it’s called bigger than that aren’t real large window in here like a bit bigger than that as well let’s find the corner there it is so I’m going pretty large on this as you can see but somewhere around here nothing nothing really specific about this size but somewhere around and here’s pretty good maybe just a little bit larger I think just find that corner again I’m just eyeballing this size here to get way I want it so what I want is I want to have two panes in here kind of in the middle and then the top panes cut off left panes cut off and giving me a little bit of space over here to place in that vaz with the roses a little bit of the corner showing as well so there’s the background they can see why I’m changing the outside windows in here it’s a bit distorted also there’s just this big tree right outside the window it’s nicely having a landscape out there with some clouds instead of that big tree so let’s take care of that next now for that we’ll just be doing a layer mask another the easy way this is real nice on this particular picture just grab the polygonal lasso tool right there let me pull it over here to the right a little bit we’ll start off here with new on the options and then this come just outside of this upper left-hand corner frame and I’ll right in the bottom I’ll click there I’ll pull it into the corner click pull just up here click to the outside corner and then click straight down again so let’s select that part now notice that I have a little bit of space outside of my picture I mean if let-up saw it further you can see that the great space out there I’m leaving a little bit of that space outside of the picture showing I’m not in like this in other words some are just a little bit outside and that allows me to be able to click just outside of the image for my selections okay so there’s the first selection now come down here change the settings to new or to add rather from new right there that’s the second option and now we can do our next set there is I’m using this tools these lines are basically straight which is fine but they’re not exactly parallel it’s kind of a Koror angle in here so I’ll click up here upper left-hand side there and then down to the corner clear across I’m not worrying about being perfectly accurate on this or about taking out all of that frame well I should cut a little bit that frame out that’s fine it kind of cleans the edges up so there’s our second one let’s move over here same exact trick on the third pane you know do the same thing on the bottom three panes as well so you somebody do this it’s adding in that selection giving me a more complex selection and let’s continue along and go clear across the bottom here and back up here’s our middle one I think in the same thing just corner to corner and to get back if the starting point in our last pane in here again corner to corner like that and this will then give us all six of those panes selected now what I want is the window frame selected it’s just easier to select the panes than it is the window frame so I can now invert this select inverse now the window frame is selected and I can hit that layer mask button right there there’s our layer mask and we now can see through the window and just hide the background see right there I actually see through that window now that’s done we can bring in our background picture back up to the file list up here again I’ve already had this open so somebody recently edited file list it’s called trees right there and you’ll find this getting the materials for this video let’s click on that there’s the tree picture I’ll pull this down here grab a background let’s drag it over here on top and close that down now comes in as a top layer as you can see so just grab your layer and drag it down underneath the window layer there’s the trees in behind and then position so it looks nice and I don’t like having this tree in the middle like that looks kind of fake so pull it off to the right side just a little bit make sure that the ground is kind of nicely placed I’m putting the horizon here about a third down in that frame right there so about one third down and then one third and one third so it gives a nice and balanced luckily has some nice kind of stormy clouds in there and nice back now they take care of that step next I want to duplicate this pull it up your new layer button there we go hide the original now the reason I did that is because we’ll be blurring out this layer and I want to have this as a safety just in case I mess this up I can always go back to that layer and try it again okay for this layer up here filter blur and the Gaussian blur right there and I have mine set at 9.8 which I found works out pretty well for this picture it’s kind of a nice soft blur effect in there choose ok so there’s without the blur right there and there’s with the blur and the reason for the blur is it adds a bit of a kind of frosted effect onto the window looks as if the window is a little bit messed up because of the rain it also focuses your attention on the inside instead of on the outside where the landscape is showing ok that disc care of the background now we can bring our raindrops in here same thing again and I have them right here it’s called drop and once again this file is on my materials Paisley’s the link for this files on the materials page so here’s the drop picture let us drag this over as you can see it’s too big the drops are too large for the image looks really fake so let’s just find the upper corner and I’ll pull this down until it’s just big enough to fit inside of that frame and that looks pretty good so I need to duplicate this now a few times I’m gonna put one right here this will be for this section right there choose ok you know if you want to at this point you can clip that out but I’ll be making some layers some copies and just copy it up again there we go let’s take this copy here pull over here to the right hand side so it kind of fits in the right-hand side like that let’s take this layer copy it again I’ll just push that straight up and I’ll move it over a little bit so it’s not an exact copy on on those different spots are kind of in different places this way ok let’s go ahead and take this one down here copy that again and I’ll drag that over here left hand so I’m gonna move this above describe rub it above that layer there we go and I’ll stick it over here someplace now it looks pretty good I’m just again moving things around and already showing the duplication in here and then it looks looks fun I think we’re okay a little bit of duplication here and here we’ll fix that in just a second everything else looks alright now I want to get rid of the overlaps in here so this layer here is overlapping a little bit into that frame right there let’s just take the Marketo here I’m going to switch this over to the rectangular marquee and I’ll drag a marquee right down this this frame section right here just drag it down pull it over hit the Delete key as I’m on the wrong layer there we go make sure on the right layer hit the Delete key and clean that out and then deselect that’s fine so the top is okay let’s now check these okay there’s an overlap right in here from this layer you can see that let’s take care of that so go to this layer same thing take my marquee tool I’ll just pull it over that window make sure you’re on the right layer hit the Delete key and take that out and then deselect it actually fixes that duplication in there as well so it looks fine a little bit of duplication I’m seeing these two dots right here misc the better cursor there about these two dots right here I’m seeing those two dots right there and I’m seeing them right here so let’s just fix that that I’ll get rid of the ones over here and the ones up here a little clone stamp just a real fast fix let’s find these first that’s on this layer right here okay so move this over again and we’re to the clone stamp tool and I’ll scrap something up and here some kind of a small area alt and click and just put that right on top of that and then alt and click and run on top of that one that just hides those obvious duplications in there kind of two here and two here that’s fun don’t do the same thing copy from here and a stamp right there and that’s fine and let’s look around I think we’re okay at that point nothing really looks too duplicated kind of a duplication here and right in here let’s go ahead and fix that and I think that that is this top layer here let’s just show and hide that that’s the one so right here it’s kind of two here and two here matches the two here and two here let’s just fix that same thing I’ll grab from here make sure you’re on the right layer there it is Alt key here and just a little paste right there someplace else Alt key over here a little paste right there that’s good enough now it’s not an exact match so everything looks fine okay that takes care of that now we need to have all of those drops on the same layer so click on your top layer hold the shift key down click on the bottom of those drop layers that’s fine right click and merge layers there is all of our raindrops now match to our window frame so that’s our next step now I want to take these and make a duplicate of this and we’re gonna invert that duplicate we’ll come back to that in just a bit just take this here new layer there we go go up to filter come down to adjustments and invert and it gives us a negative this is what we be getting those white highlights from is this layer and then everything else is from that layer ok that brings our raindrops in when I need to merge this window drop layer into our landscaping behind and we’ll do that with a blend mode that’s right here you should want the right layer there we go blend mode you come down to multiply witch’s just down just a little bit there we are and that blends this into that landscape that gives us kind of those dark edges in there it’s not too bad but we can make that look a little bit better and make it better looking by bringing in our black layer up here and then change the blend mode of this layer to lighter color which is right down there there you go so now have light edges on all of those but I want to a little bit of the dark as well so I’m just going to click on the cursor keys on my keyboard oh those arrow keys and then using those arrow keys I’ll just tap that up just a couple of taps so we’re now seeing the dark edge of your layer underneath with the light edge on top you can choose how many want you want there is just one up there’s two there’s three those are the further I go the more pronounced the effect is so there’s none there’s one and there’s two I think I’ll go for two for this video it’s a little bit on the strong side it’s not quite as realistic maybe but I think it looks nice and it has a nice effect to that okay so there’s our nice raindrops in there for a little more control on those raindrops let’s add in an adjustment layer so layer adjustment layer levels and where it says use previous layer click on that one make sure you’re on the negative raindrops layer choose okay there’s our levels now I can adjust the mid-tone in here and kind of control the fogginess of the window a little bit or I can darken down those chubsters not quite as bright notice up this control will still see the brightness on the larger dots and not as much on the smaller dots I can do that I can also come down here to the output levels and pull this in a little bit and the highlights will go down just a touch so with these settings you can fine-tune exactly how much it’ll highlight that you’re seeing I’m just going to leave this clear to the top and I’ll bring this down to about point 50 in there it just tones down those a little bit let’s see how it looks there’s before and there’s Africa and knocks off the small drops and leaves the larger drops alone didn’t choose okay so little find to an adjustment right there all right all we have left to do then is bring in our flowers and put the flowers in here in front of everything else so go up to file I again have mine in my recent file list and there it is it’s called our OS should be rose there’s our Rose picture again you find a link for this on my materials page take this and it’s drag that in can flooding windows now it’s in behind as you can see I want this one in front of our windows and scrub the layer pull it in front so it’s on top we can now resize this to fit just pull it down and grab the upper left-hand corner there and drag it down and we’ll adjust the size I want it just a little bit so the bottom is just coming off of the frame like that and so this Rose here is just about at the top level of that middle bar on the frame and that’s just about right and then this Rose over here will be coming in just a little over that edge that’s just about the right spot choose okay now we’ll need to do a mask on this so I’m gonna start with a careful mask around this edge here and then we’ll do kind of a large mask around there and adjust those edges using the refine edge tool so start off with zooming in grab the zoom tool and I’ll zoom in nice and tight here on that there we go and then grab the polygonal lasso tool again right over there let’s make sure this is set at NU also at this point you can bring this back up and close that file down we’re done with that file and I’ll start right around here so I know where I am beginning ministered a careful selection around the vaaz door now don’t go too fast on this ago mm will collapse on itself so take your time to move this selection has told the space bar down that turns into a hand you can then pull that down like that whenever you see this hand showing that means that I’ve held down the space bar for a minute to make that that move okay so go ahead and continue on around again taking my time around this part of the vaaz it’s a nice clean background makes it fairly easy you can try other techniques you can try the magic wand on this although I found it wasn’t really as accurate as this technique is you can also try the magic eraser tool that sometimes works but again I think taking a little longer for a better selection is worth the time okay a lot of little detail around the edges of these leaves so we’ll do that with their fine edge tool so I’ll just make my selection out here a bit like that and again spacebar to move the image around and we’ll just go clear around the whole rows this way and we’ll then come back and remove some those inside white spots inside of the Rose image so at this point I’m just going to keep on doing this I’ll pause the video and I’ll bring it back up as soon as I have this first part of the selection step done just to save you 2 or 3 minutes of watching me do this which is kind of boring I admit so be right back and we’ll take it from that point and there’s a selection outside now I need to fix this part here these little bits in here that and that let’s fix that by changing the tool here over to subtract right there since these are inside of the selection I’m going to be subtracting those and I’ll just plan on using the refine edge tool in here to fix this stuff so I’ll just going to grab in the middle some play so I have some selection in there just like that you don’t need much on this just a little bit of a selection to let the tool know where to look again just a little little triangle right in there is all I need and a little triangle in here is all you need again and right here same thing there we go ok now we’ll switch over to the Select menu up here and come down to refine edge that brings up the refine edge tool see there’s the size of the brush if you want to change the brush size that’s right down here in the options mine’s at 35 and that’s fine for this and then simply come in paint right over that edge and that allows elements to come in and kind of clean up that edge now right here it cannot paint it in a bit of the mask on top that leaf will fix that on a second pass the first passed is just to go around and catch all the leaves we’re gonna switch to the hand tool here make it really easy and then switch back to the painting tool notice I’m doing this kind of in little bits I’m not doing the whole thing all at one shot I’m just coming down getting a little bits like that let it think about it for a minute and then I’ll come back to that I’ll fix that a little bit as well final cleanup step in a score round where you have those edges shown and that all that elements come into a nice clean up now if it doesn’t quite catch it we can always do those by hand afterwards if we have to okay should go catch that one it does there we go and we’ll just continue around and get the whole outside edge on this there we are and once that’s done we can then make a layer mask out of that and we’ll see our picture in behind it if it would be basically done and start from a little bit of control clean up on that yeah once this is done we’ll go ahead and we’ll show you that girls need to like I said fix those little red areas where the mask is going over the leaf I won’t pick the time do all of those perfectly I’ll just go ahead and get this finished too rather quickly here and then just tell you how to fix those I’ll do a little demonstration on that okay so we have the edge in here not quite exactly right on some spots kind of goes over the leaves just change her to this tool this is the edgy eraser tool those little minus sign in there I’ll make this at a smaller size now just bring it down to about maybe 10 you can even type that in okay there’s my eraser tool and then has come over this wherever you have that coming into your leaves yeah it then cleans that out so let’s go backwards then around your image and catch those little areas where it was doing too much of a mask that does that on you just go back and recheck that again there we go and this way you can do a real nice clean mask it’ll you know be catching both sides for it there it is a little bit more on this side and right there and missed those two hand do those they’re kind of going white again so I’ll just do those by hand I’ll do that later let’s finish this step they’re just a matter again of this going along and making sure that your mask isn’t going over anywhere you don’t want it to a little hard to tell here because of course the Rose is red anyway I can do better in there by hand looks okay there looks okay in there seeing a little bit in here where the pink is coming into the leaf let’s just make sure we catch all of that and then clean up that outside edge it’s these little details that really sell the effect so it’s worth taking the time to do this okay I think that’s almost everything this is little last leaf in here I think we can do a little bit better job right in there getting back to catch the edges like that and our final leaf right down here now normally I would take this out to a new layer with a selection but because I have this area here I need to fix that and they need to fix this bit and these bits I’ll just take it to a selection right there output to selection she’s okay there’s our selection again here’s all our layers right there so on or top layer there’s a selection so I can now go back in and still using the polygonal lasso tool and sit on subtract I can clean those sections out so I’ll just hand do these as well as those times when they were fine edge till it just doesn’t really work it was great for the outside but it really didn’t do that well in here so sometimes you have to go back just do it the hard way yeah that’s okay gets a little bit longer to do that so I’m going to pause the video at this point and I’ll go ahead and is clean up these little inside areas and as soon as that’s done I’ll bring the video back up and do the final steps on this project and there’s a thinner selection Olimpica and i redid all of the inner parts here by hand interesting on that kind of thing the refine edge tool doesn’t always work for you it worked out fine into my sample before this video and it didn’t work this time so sometimes you have to do it the hard way and just go in and carefully make your selections any case there’s our selection around the roses we can now click on the layer mask button right there there’s our layer mask and now is sitting really nicely in front of the window there’s one last thing to do on this aside from just a little adjustment on the values and that’s that the roses aren’t quite as in focus as the background is especially the high contrast water drops so you need to sharpen this layer up just a little bit make sure you’re on the image side over here look for that light blue outline if it’s over here just double click on the image side of that layer and then the enhanced menu come down to adjust sharpness and the default setting should work fine let’s go ahead and preview that there’s without and there it is with it’s just a little subtle thing but it’s just enough to make it look like it’s all part of the same picture choose okay last little step then is an adjustment layer on top of this let’s go up to layer come down to adjustment layer and levels the gamer says use previous layer does check that choose okay and we can now adjust the levels in here to make this just a little bit more contrast I’ll pull the darks in just a touch on the left-hand side so it darkens it down just a little bit of that maybe 17 or so right in there leave that as is and let’s bring the lights up just a little bit see that’s the lights right there so just a little bit up on that one maybe about 145 there we go so a little more contrast again bringing the darks and the lights up to help blend this in with the rest of the picture and what you done close that down and there it is kind of a a dark rainy day with some nice roses just inside of the window and again with the special little tricks in here for the raindrops on the windowpane thank you for watching my video I hope you found it useful if you like this video click on the like button below to let others know
